Adventure 3
At the beginning of the third adventure Rodrick was feeling well
again after his bout with an unnamed illness. He started out after
his companions who were headed for south Saxon. His journey was
relatively uneventful until he approaches the south Saxon border.
There he runs into a priest that is tied to a tree along with
two of his companions. The priest was naked but identified himself
to Rodrick as Oswald the priest. Rodrick untied them and learned
of their story. Rodrick recognized the characters in this story
except for one.....a dryad with powerful magic. Rodrick shared
Oswald's concern that the group may have been taken over by this
magical being and are doing its bidding.
After a time Rodrick continues his journey alone but only after
promising that he would take care of the dryad in the name of
his god. He eventually runs into his companions as they are approaching
a small British town in South Saxon. Bos and Eira introduce Mariel
(the dryad) to Rodrick and catch him up on what's going on and
what has happened.....including their run in with the priest.
Rodrick admits to running into the priest but does not discuss
his conversation with him.
Upon reaching the sight of the small village (it has a wall around
it) the group spots an encampment. Bos and Mariel are invisible
(out of mind) as they approach the clearing and so are not visible
to the band of Saxons that ambush Eira and Rodrick. Bos and Mariel
remain invisible and wait to see what happens. Eira challenges
the leader for her freedom and proceeds to defeat him handily.
The Saxons agree to leave her alone but still take Rodrick into
custody to take back to the encampment known as Woden's Doom.
The group learned earlier that Woden's Doom was a band of Saxon
priests and warriors reigning terror on the brits occupying South
Saxon. It is a very large group but they are unable to siege the
village due to the protection afforded it by the wall surrounding
the city.
Eira is torn between killing the Saxons and letting Rodrick go
with them. If she fights them then she risks getting Rodrick killed.
She decides to wait until nightfall. Once the Saxons leave then
Mariel and Bos become visible to wait for nightfall as well.
In camp Rodrick is greeted by several priests that are obviously
rune priests. They question Rodrick for awhile and Rodrick tells
them of his conversation with Oswald. The leader of the group
seems to be unpersuaded by Rodrick's story and proceeds to make
him his slave. for the rest of the evening Rodrick is tied to
a stake and left there to contemplate his situation.
Meanwhile Rodrick's companions devise a plan to free Rodrick but
first Mariel will go into camp invisible and try to free Rodrick
with magical means. She goes into camp and places a knife in Rodrick's
hands and quickly makes both of them invisible again. This allowed
Rodrick time to cut through his own bonds and walk out of camp
unnoticed. However, the bindings around Rodrick's wrists do not
permit a hasty escape and his absence is noticed quickly. A cry
goes out and the priests eventually find him at the stake they
left him at through magical means. This interested the priests
greatly and the leader took a new interest in Rodrick's apparent
powers over the mind. Afterwards a guard was placed next to Rodrick
to watch him over the night.
Mariel made it back to the group after having failed to free Rodrick.
The new plan was to wait until well into the night and strike
again but with brute force. The three of them were to enter camp
while invisible and then on cue they were all to act quickly so
they could escape. Bos was to take out the guard next to Rodrick
and free Rodrick. Once that started the Mariel and Eira were to
enter the priest's tent and kill them. However, one thing did
bother them....the light in the priest's tent never went out.
The initial stages of the attack went well. Bos picked up the
guard and crushed him in his powerful grip. He finished the guard
by stepping on him on his way over to Rodrick. he quickly cut
the ropes. At the same time Mariel and Eira entered into the tent
only to be surprised. The priests were sitting around a parchment
where the words seem to be alive and moving. Then all hell broke
loose. Eira attacked a priest but both Mariel and Eira realized
the futility of staying to fight and quickly left to find Bos
now under attack by several spear throwing saxons. Eira picked
up Mariel and Bos picked up Rodrick and they fled the scene. They
started to run towards the nearby village and their pursuers unexpectedly
stopped following them.
The four of them continued to run to the village but slowed down
a little when they realized they weren't being followed. Rodrick,
Bos and Eira had all been injured in the exchange so they bandaged
their wounds quickly. But before long the approach of a black
oily looking figure approached. Mariel and Eira recognized it
immediately as the thing that was forming on the parchment in
the priest's tent. It was large, very large and immediately went
to attack. It severely injured Mariel but Eira and Bos were able
to fight it off and apparently injure it enough so that it fell
apart into a large black spot on the ground. Mariel remained unconscious
from her injuries so the Bos carried her on their way to the village.
The next morning the group found themselves in the village. Apparently
many strangers did not enter the village because they seemed to
be the talk of the town. Eira and Rodrick found an inn to rest
in and to let Mariel rest as well. Mariel remained unconscious
throughout that day. Bos wandered the village and was approached
by the bard of the village, Cynen the bard. Cynen gave Bos a tour
of the village and helped him find places to replenish their food
supply. Cynen was very interested in the giant's stories and was
eager to talk to Eira and Rodrick as well. Eventually he found
them in the inn and questioned them about their own stories.
The day in the village was uneventful. The group ate well and
tended to their own wounds. That night the group slept in the
inn except for Bos who slept outside of Mariel's window. The night
time, however, was eventful.
In the middle of the night Bos was awoken by a shrill scream.
He quickly grabbed his mace and went to investigate. He found
the house where the scream came from and poked his head inside
to inquire as to the problem. Inside were a man and his wife looking
over an empty baby cradle. The woman was sobbing and hysterical.
When she saw Bos she pointed at him and started to scream, "it
was them! It was them!". Bos was confused but before long an angry
crowd had gathered at the inn. Eira and Rodrick had been awakened
and approached by Kinen.
Apparently the baby had been stolen and because that generally
did not happen in this village the villagers were blaming the
only strangers they had seen in a long time. Naturally they wanted
to kill these strangers outright but Cynen acted as judge and
gave the group a chance. Basically the group had to find the baby
in a week's time or essentially be excommunicated from society....a
fate worse than death. The group has no choice to accept the mission
because it pertains to their own well being.
The next morning Mariel wakes up feeling much better from her
wounds. She is informed of the events of the last day. With everyone
well and informed they set off to find the baby..................
Adventure 4
The last time we found our adventurers being forced into looking
for a stolen baby. They were being accused of stealing the baby
themselves and so if they could not retrieve it within a weeks
time then they were to be banished from society....a fate worse
than death.
The first thing that the group did was to hire a tracker for none
of them were particularly skilled in this area. The tracker was
able to determine that there was a faint trace of some footsteps
going off into the woods. This was to be the path that the adventurers
were to follow.
Before taking off, however, Mariel questioned the inn keepers
son, who was guarding the gate that night, only to find that he
was not very friendly and more than a little suspicious himself.
With no questions answered, the group with their tracker and his
son, take off through the woods. The trip through the woods was
fairly uneventful. The tracker told tales of woodland creatures
including that of a giant wolf. Nobody really believed him, however,
there were some very large wolf tracks found.
Eventually the party heard a crying noise up ahead and quickened
their pace to catch up with it. When they did see the baby the
saw that it was being carried by a goblin....obviously to be brought
back to be turned into a goblin.
The party carefully approached the camp to see that there were
a couple of other goblins in camp as well. The party devised a
plan. Mariel would turn Bos, Eira, and herself invisible so as
to sneak up to the goblins. Mariel would try to rescue the baby
and once she became visible then that was the other's cue to attack
the others. Unfortunately, Mariel was rushed because the goblin
she was approaching had the baby and started to head for a hole
in the air (it was a portal). Her attempt to grab the baby only
sent it flying and it landed several yards away (with a thud).
The goblin, startled, quickly scrambled to reach the baby and
disappear into the portal.
Meanwhile, Bos and Eira begin to attack the others. However, it
was a trap!! Immediately, others started to appear from the brush.
At first it was three more, then six more and even more after
that. Mariel quickly jumped in the portal after the baby and Rodrick
followed quickly afterwards. That left Eira and Bos to fight off
the growing number of goblins. It was unrealistic to think that
the portal was an escape.
As more and more goblins appeared, Bos and Eira were beginning
to worn down. However, a loud battle cry came from a new ally......Cadwallyn
[sp] and some of his men. They came charging out of the forest
and the tide of the battle was turned and the goblins retreated.
This left only Bos and Eira to explain what was going on. After
their story, Cadwallyn decided to join them to hunt for the baby
(after all what other nobler cause was there). So all three went
into the portal where the found Mariel and Rodrick waiting. What
they found in front of them was a dense forest with a large looming
mountain behind that. The group came close to being lost a couple
of times while trying to find their way through the forest. However,
they came upon a couple of goblins and shared their lunch with
them (strange as it was) in exchange for pointing the group in
the right direction. This did not come without the usual insults
and come ons to the women of our group. One of the goblins was
particularly infatuated with Mariel. The goblins finally left
and the group continued on its journey.
Before reaching the mountain the group was attacked. The attack
was not sudden and the group actually saw them first. It was a
band of wolves but there was one among them that was peculiar.
He was a very large wolf and when he stopped to sniff the air
he stood up and walked around on two legs like a human. He appeared
to be an intelligent creature. The wolves' keen sense of smell
led them straight to the group who was waiting. Eventually the
group was able to fend them off and hurt them enough that they
ran off. Two of the wolves that were killed were used as dinner
later.
Finally the group reached an opening that led into the mountain...............
Adventure Conclusion (Adventures 5 & 6)
[Because it has been a long time since we did these adventures,
most of this will be just a brief overview of what happened]
This story is written for me by Kinen the bard. This is Bos and
I tell this tale of adventure so that others may know how it all
started. For you see the land of the Saxons is in turmoil. The
Saxons find themselves in many battles these days and not just
with themselves or the British. Now the Saxons must add the goblins
to their list of their sworn enemies in their own land. This would
not be so significant if it were not for the fact that the goblins
are organized and seem to have endless numbers. Also the British
have gained a new confidence in this land and have been more effective
at protecting the small strongholds they have acquired here.
However, this turning of the tide has not come without its price.
We have lost a dear friend and her bravery and sacrifice must
be known to all of Britain. For were it not for her sacrifice
surely the Saxons would have killed many more of the British.
She did it for Britain............
To complete the story I have to go back to standing in front of
a mountainous cavern in the otherworld. I was traveling with Eira
(a champion for the king of Gwent), Mariel (a dryad), Rodrick
(a catholic priest), and Cadwallon (a prince fighting the saxons
in south saxon). We (except for Cadwallon) had been accused by
a local village of stealing one of their babies. The only way
to prove our innocence was to reclaim the baby who had been stolen
by a goblin. We had followed that goblin to a portal where it
escaped through. This is where Cadwallon joined us. We were determined
and so followed the goblin through the portal where we were met
with many other perils before we finally caught up with the goblin.
We had to travel through a mountain, where we were attacked by
a dragon (Cadwallon bravely faced the dragon alone while we escaped).
Eventually we cornered the goblin who offered us the baby in exchange
for his bodily health. We found Cadwallon later with a water fairy
(Cadwallon had faced the dragon bravely but was thrown off a land
bridge into the underground river where he was saved by the fairy)
who sent us back to our own world.
We returned the baby to the village and we regained our status
as heroes. We had planned to then return to Avalon to inform the
priestesses of the Isle of the state of affairs here in South
Saxon. However, we stayed with Cadwallon's army for awhile first.
Metal workers were able to construct armor (ring mail) for me
from other armor that I had taken off of my fallen foes. I was
eternally grateful (being of giant size makes armor hard to come
by) for this.
Then Cadwallon had an idea and a plan. Goblins were common in
this area and they didn't seem to discriminate against who they
attacked. These goblins also had a king (something learned from
the water fairy). Cadwallon's idea was to seek an audience with
this king and make a pact with him so that the goblins only attacked
the saxons. In exchange, Cadwallon's army would offer scouting
services and set traps for the Saxons. The downside to this plan
was of course....what happens when the goblins run out of saxons
to attack.....however, this seemed like an unlikely scenario.
So we went. Cadwallon, Mariel, Eira, Rodrick, and myself all went
to the otherworld to seek the Goblin king. We found our way back
to the other world easily enough but decided this time to go around
the mountain instead of through it. In the process we had to fight
a few trolls and escape a few more but we managed to make it around
the mountain and could see a large city in the distance.
During our travel we came across a woman who was near death. She
had obviously been in a fight with several others. Mariel managed
to save her life by removing the arrow from her neck.
The unicorn told us that we were to go to a city in the clouds
to find the king. She, her mate, and another unicorn (he could
grow to be enormous) took us to the city in a very short time.
Eira's father and mother did not follow us because there was great
animosity between the unicorns and the goblins.
When we reached the bridge to the city there was a Giant standing
by its entrance. The unicorns told us that we would have to answer
a question that the giant would pose to us and if we answered
incorrectly, the cloud bridge would not support our weight and
we would plummet to our deaths down a deep ravine. We approached
the giant and successfully answered his questions to pass into
the city.
The city was full of goblins and they were not very friendly.
They attempted to goad us into fighting them but there were too
many of them and we would have surely been overtaken. As long
as we didn't fight then they didn't seem to pursue us as a large
group.
We finally reached the castle in the city and were escorted in
to a large hall were there was dancing and music. All of the dancers
appeared to be humans (we later learned that it was all an illusion
and that they were really goblins). In the center of the room
was the king. We approached him and presented our proposal. However,
he did not like what we had to offer....it wasn't enough.
The king finally made an offer... He would do as we asked if and
only if Mariel would be his bride. The king was a very handsome
guy but I do not think that Mariel or any one else in our group
was keen on having her stay. However, Mariel realized that it
was the only way. She knew that by doing this she would be doing
Britain a great service and so she agreed to stay.
The king gave us medalions that were to be worn while in this
world so as to remain unmolested by the goblins, but we were to
leave immediately. We did not even get to see Mariel's wedding.
And so here we are. We are back in the village where this all
started. I am dictating this to Cynen who has a skilled hand at
drawing sounds. I am learning. Rodrick has gone back to Avalon
to be with the one he loves and to report to the priestesses what
has happened here. Only Eira and I remain here with Cadwallon.
We plan to stay here for awhile to see to it that the goblin king
keeps his promise and to help his goblin soldiers find their prey.
We will miss Mariel but we can honor her by carrying on in the
spirit of her sacrifice. There is much to do here to make way
for the Brits.......
