The Druids View

by Joel Perkins

Well getting the last part of the broken sword of King Arthur was interesting.

During the battle where the rest of the party drove the Jackal men off, I went to explore the rest of the underground area we were in. I had cast a spell that I hoped would render me invisible to the creatures but I wasn’t really sure until they all started running past me. I didn’t see any more captives alive. But I did check all the holding cells just to be sure.

I did not know if the Jackal beasts were trying to attack from the front and the rear, although I could tell that some of them had been fighting. I hurried forward.

It seemed the party was victorious. They didn’t need my help and no one was seriously injured although Arthen did have a crossbow bolt in his foot. Since Shard hardly ever uses his, and Arthen was shooting dirty looks at the Dwarf that joined us, need I say more?

They set the captive free that was tied to the stake and were arguing about who should be up front with Derrick. Excuse me, did I say arguing? I meant discussing, in a calm rational manner so descriptive of the British people. It seems that Arthen refused to have the Dwarf behind him with a loaded cross bow. HA HA HA. Sorry I still think its funny even now.

No one seemed to miss me or even care that I was gone. Except Sima, who looked angry, and I found out later said that maybe I had run away because I was afraid. I don’t know what her problem is but a beautiful woman can get away with a lot.

I got tired of waiting and so, looking around I saw a set of stairs going down. So I did the natural thing and went down them... I know, IDIOT. I was lucky that nothing was down there but I was feeling cocky and because my spell was working. In truth it was the first time that I had ever cast it out of the grove where I learned it. I am so new to the wide world beyond the college grove. I feel that I should be doing more. In any event I went down the stairs while the rest of the party arguing about who should go first. There was nothing down there except a room with two doors side by side.

I looked for any obvious traps, then opened one of the doors. In hind sight I should have listened at the door, too. But again there was nothing in the room. I glanced around and listened for the party but since they were STILL discussing marching order I went inside. It was a TRAP!

There were Saxon runes on the floor and the doors only opened from one side. I smelled an odor of burning oil and then I began to cough and feel ill. I felt weak as if some one had hit me. I started to furiously pound on the door but I don’t think anyone heard me. I was getting desperate and was thinking of trying to drive my dagger into the wood hard enough so that it would not pull free and then using it to open the door.

At that moment, Derrick opened the door. I pushed him back. I think I was only able to do that because he was not ready for it. I was still coughing but I explained to the party that it was a trap and I asked Shard to use his innate healing Power on me. The bad air must have hit me hard because I felt much better when he was done. With Sima and the Dwarf was holding the doors open, Shard, Arthen and Derrick entered the room. While Arthen was checking the bodies, Derrick discovered a concealed door. I was feeling better so Derrick Arthen and I entered the room. We saw a pile of broken blades. And to my horror as we watched the blades began to move together and from some sort of metal golem made out of iron blades. Knowing my limitations, I quickly left the room to get Shard. I went to hold the door and Shard entered the hidden room. Where combat was soon taking place.

It did not go well. Sima, the dwarf and I were helplessly watching the fight with the sword golem. When Derrick was hit, Sima went crazy and left her place at the door, screaming Derricks name like a war cry. They were breaking off little pieces of it and I yelled to hem about using the flats and hafts of their weapons but no one listened. Arthen got hit and told me to shut up; I was distracting him. I will forgive that insult this time because of the heat of combat. But he and I are going to have a talk about the proper reverence that is due a Druid if it happens again. I worked too long and too hard to become a full druid and I will not be taken lightly despite my lack of combat skills.

Sorry, I got off the subject there, where was I. Oh yes, about this time the dwarf, left his post at the door and entered the fray and if any one was watching but me they saw him reluctantly get out his Ax, he made quite a show of it. Although he was moving quickly. I must have blinked or the bad air was getting to me for I was starting to feel sick again. When Shard was hit.. I could no longer stay by my post at the door. I took my dagger and spiked the door so it couldn’t close. Then I ran forward to bind up the wounds on Derrick and Shard. I got to Shard and he looked as if he would be all right. I could not heal him, for I had done so only hours before but I knew that he would recover with time. As I approached, Derrick got to his feet. By this time Arthen had been hit at least once more, perhaps twice. And the Dwarf had broken his battle-ax. I got to my feet and headed into combat, because it looked like the party was getting the worst of it. Out if the corner of my eye I saw the Dwarf loading his crossbow. I swung and missed the Golem.

And then a crossbow bolt hit it and it disintegrated into dust.

I looked around and saw there was one remaining sword blade. I picked it up and went to Arthen who was knocked out by one of the golems last blows. I was going to check and see if he was all right and if this was the blade we needed although I was quite sure it was. Arthen woke up and said that perhaps I should hold onto the blade and he the hilt for safety. I realized that this was his way of apologizing for tell me to shut up and so I graciously accepted.

We stayed in the cave system until it was time for the boat to come and pick us up. Then we sailed back to the mainland and started home.

As we were passing through, we heard of a war in the kingdom of Mannau Gododdin, where the Northumbrian were invading and we almost went there to help our British and Pictish brothers in the valiant effort but we decided that our real mission was too important. With his defeat at the hands of these same Northumbrians lead by his foster brother Edwin, Cadwallon would need the symbolism of Arthur’s broken sword reunited even more. In the long run it would be better for Britain if we sought him out first.

Days and nights passed until one night I was on watch and I heard wolves howl. A lot of wolves. I was curious, so I woke Shard because I remembered that he could change into a wolf. I wanted to see if the party was in any danger. Alas if I had only let him sleep. Shard woke quickly and when I explained what I wanted he was more than happy to help. He quickly merged into his wolf form and set out. I waited and waited. The wolves kept howling. Shard’s watch was next so I took it for him. When he did not appear, I woke Arthen and told him what had happened. We weighed the alternatives and decided to get Derrick’s wise counsel. This woke the rest of the party for Derrick’s and Arthen’s whispers were quite loud. We were getting ready to set out. I had just finished enchanting Derricks weapon when the howling stopped. Since none of us have the skill of tracking, we laid back down for the night

Arthen took the watches for he could not sleep. If the truth be told, I could not either. Shard, Shard what have I done. We set out the next morning down the trail and we found a deserted farm with all the animals slaughtered and the house a shambles. While there was blood, there was not a lot of blood and no bodies were found. This was not natural if it is the work of beasts. I wonder if there is more going on than a pack of wolves. Are they being directed by some thing human??? Perhaps the people of this farm have escaped to the nearest town.

We arrived at a ‘T’- intersection where we could go left to a tower or right to a town. Since we were on Saxon lands even though we are in Saxon looking armor we can not speek the language. So we went to the town, not the Lord of the these lands, although Arthen’s code pulled him strongly to report to the lord of these lands he agreed to at least go to the village and report the things we saw and give them warning. They can tell their lord.. We must find Shard, get a Tracker and find him or bury him. The local black smith was most talkative. They know of the wolf problem and have told the Lord but with the war effort going on he has other more important things to do with the man power he has at his disposal. I get the feeling that this is a bigger problem than wolves but don’t know why I feel that way.

That night we headed back to the farm that we found deserted. Tomorrow we will find a tracker, find Shard.

We never made it to the deserted farm. On the way, Derrick for no apparent reason, turned suddenly and hit the horse behind him with a sling stone. The dwarf was riding the horse as it pitched madly about, and was quickly thrown. He tucked and landed well but he still took some damage and was shaken up a bit. His horse, well Shard’s horse, ran off and Arthen and Derrick with Sima riding double, took off after it. I hope they caught it.

The three of us that were left didn’t think we could find the farmhouse in the dark. So we went back to the village and slept at the inn. Had a nice good supper. Okay anything would have been good after the travel rations, it was fresh and there was bread baked just that morning with butter. I really miss those things on the trail. In the morning, we had some eggs and some gruel. Then I went to the blacksmith and asked where I might find a skilled tracker. I was directed to a farmhouse down the road and set out.

The farmer, while polite, didn’t want to set out into the woods because of the wolves and to tell the truth I cant blame him. SIGH

I now go to do something very stupid but I fear that it is my only choice. I must go to the Saxon Lord and try and get him to allow me to help deal with the wolf problem. Maybe if I said there was evil magic involved that would help convince him. I end this now and I am going to the Tower that stands in the distance

First Adventure

It is early summer (May 2) when we start our campaign in Dawn of Legends. Our first adventure starts out in [Gwent]. There Rodrick, a Roman Catholic priest, has been given a mission. He is to join up with a woman, Eira who is on a mission for the King. She is on her way to Avalon to seek a prophecy for the King. The king is worried about what will happen to his kingdom once he passes from the world and so has sent Eira to get a prophecy from a druid priestesses of the island of Avalon. The Catholic church is also very interested in this prophecy and so have sent Rodrick to accompany her. Rodrick also employs Bos, a half giant, who owes Rodrick for saving his life once, to accompany him on the trip.

Rodrick met with Eira at the town market and convinced her to allow him and the half giant to accompany her on her trip. He does this by convincing her that he will not shove religion down her throat and by suggesting that if she does not take us she will be hounded by other priests her entire trip…..she agrees to let them join her.

As an idea of what the party is like….. Eira is a warrior. It is obvious that she is of nobility for she not only fights like it but looks the part as well. In other words she is very aware of her appearance to others. She also has an air of “no nonsense” about her. She is direct and straight to the point. Rodrick the priest is not given in to a showy display. Instead he gives the appearance of a humble man yet a man with power. He cares very deeply for the common man but is also aware of his own status in the church and the power that he wields. Known to many is his own tolerance for the druids and their religion….this makes him unpopular in some Catholic circles. Bos stands out in any crowd. He is a half giant but is commonly mistaken for a lesser giant (he is a half giant that has the fairy ability of giantism). He is immensely strong and a fierce warrior. His loyalty to his friends is only matched by his capacity for vengeance. Bos has many capabilities that he is unaware of.

Anyway, once the three adventurers were prepared for the trip they set off for Avalon. The trip took a few days longer than it should have because they had to travel all of the trip by land (Rodrick is terrified of the water and refused to travel by sea). For the inconvenience of taking us on as companions and traveling exclusively by land, Eira made Rodrick promise that he would help her with another errand in the future. The first couple of days of the trip were uneventful. On the fourth day, the party came upon a small village that was being attacked by a group of bandits. Houses were being burned and women and children were being stabbed to death. This caused a bad reaction from Bos (his own parents were killed in a similar fashion) and he immediately charged into battle. Rodrick and Eira joined him. There were [twelve] bandits and three of them were archers. Bos took out four of the bandits almost immediately while Rodrick and Eira took out two apiece. The archers fled but not before Bos was able to kill one of them with a crossbow. Four of the bandits survived only to become slaves of the village. The party rested for a day and then departed the next day with the weaponry that the bandits were carrying.

The party finally reached Glastonbury ([near] Avalon) in Glastening with no further incident. The island of Avalon is [in the middle of] the lake from the town and so the party had to wait for a boat at dawn. It was a strange place because a mist seemed to cover everything. The mist was especially thick on the water making travel almost impossible. The local townspeople informed the party that that was the whole idea. The mist is protection from a mass assault on the island. Bos spent his time in town selling the bandits’ weapons and shields and purchased supplies. Rodrick also purchased a suit of studded leather with this money realizing that his clothing was not enough protection in a fight. At dawn the party met at the shore and awaited the boat that was to take them to the island. After a small discussion regarding the priest actually getting in the boat (remember he is terrified of the water) the party proceeded. The trip across the lake itself was very eventful. The priest himself kept his eyes closed and prayed a lot promising God a lot of things as long as he made his passage across the water safely. Eira took in the ride calmly and almost peacefully as she stared out into the impenetrable mist as if she saw something. Bos also looked out into the mist but seemed terrified and clutched his warhammer often. Once safely on the shore of the island Bos revealed that he saw a dragon in the mist that said “fight me”. He was very upset over this and was even more distraught upon discovering that the others did not see it. Eira only said that she saw hills through the mist. It was hard for the others to believe either Eira or Boss because the mist was so thick.

The party walked up the path from the boat and reached three preistesses with one of them the obvious leader (she wore brown robes while the others wore white). The brown robbed priestess addressed Eira and informed her that the prophecy would take five days to make and that the party was welcome to stay on the island if they liked or leave and come back in five days. Rodrick quickly convinced everyone that the party should stay instead of braving the waters again so quickly.

The adventurers quickly started becoming familiar with their surroundings. Eira kept to herself somewhat while roaming around. Rodrick talked to several of the priestesses about everyday life on the island. Bos immediately started to question a few of the priestesses about the dragon that he saw in the mist. One priestess told him that there was no dragon around the island but that some who have magical abilities may see visions in the mists (this is confusing to Bos because as far as he knows he has no such abilities). She also told him that he should try looking into the “eye of the goddess” which was a well nearby. Bos immediately proceeded to the well and stared into it. He saw many things that he recognized as his own thoughts and then a new vision came to him that he did not recognize. In this vision he saw a group of men standing to fight a dragon that was descending upon them. Many of the men were running in fear but many stayed to fight only to be crushed by the dragon. The dragon then faced Bos as if he were actually there and proceeded to approach him only to disappear in a puff of smoke…..then the vision ended. This confused Bos even more and told the priestesses of this….they were not able to help him much except to say that his vision probably represented his fate in some way. Rodrick was skeptical of the whole thing and was not convinced when he looked into the well himself and saw nothing. Eira decided to look into it at another time.

Because of his large size, Bos set up a tent outside to sleep in while Rodrick stayed in private quarters and Eira stayed in one of the women’s dormitories. The first night was uneventful except for what happened with Bos. He awoke in the middle of the night to what sounded like a galloping horse. As he went outside his tent he could see that it looked like a rather large white horse. When the horse heard Bos it turned its head to reveal a single long horn on the front of the horse-like head. Both Bos and this creature were startled and the “horse” departed quickly into the mist. The next morning Bos inquired about the animal but no one knew of any such animal. He did find tracks (very unusual tracks too because they er the size of a horse but were cloven hooves like that of a deer) next to his tent and was able to point them out to one of the priestesses, however, the tracks disappeared later that morning because of all the women walking around doing chores. Even an elderly priestess did not believe Bos. For the rest of the day Bos, Eira, and Rodrick helped with chores on the island to help work off the expense of their stay. Although Rodrick became attracted to one of the druids by the name of Briana. He met her at dinner the previous evening and spent most of the day with her.

On that second night Bos prepared himself to listen for the “horse” again so that he might find a way to prove to the others that he had seen such a creature. Meanwhile, Rodrick had plans of his own with Briana. Rodrick and Briana found privacy in Rodrick’s room. Here one thing led to another and Rodrick found himself abandoning his priestliness for the pleasures of this woman…..needless to say he didn’t get much sleep. Later in the night Bos also heard a sound that was not Rodrick and Briana…..it was the sound of hooves on stone. He got up immediately and ran down to the shore to where the sound came from. He found the “horse” again but this time the horse saw him too and didn’t seem to be as spooked as the previous night. The horse galloped off but not so fast that Bos could not follow, which he did. Bos ran after the “horse” for many miles. The “horse” even seemed to play games with him as it would slow down and act as if it was enjoying a game. After leading Bos to the farthest point of the island, it ran off leaving Bos to walk all the way back several miles. The next morning Bos told the druids again of his experience but they seemed incredulous. One of the priestesses encouraged him to keep asking questions so that he may find answers among the questions. The next three days passed by relatively uneventfully. Bos would stay up at night but never did see the “horse” again. Occasionally he would hear it but only briefly. Rodrick now spent all of his time with Briana…..day and night consummating a love that cannot be. Eira and Bos both spent their days helping out with the chores. On the fifth day the prophecy was revealed to Eira, Rodrick and Bos. The prophecy foretold that the king would die a warrior and that shadows would surround his throne but that a light would emerge. The prophecy was not translated. As we prepared to take our leave Briana asked Rodrick for a favor which he readily agreed to because it meant coming back to see her. The favor she asked of us was to check in on the [fallen] kingdom of [the South Saxons] to see how they were doing and to determine how the druids could help them. This needs to be done in the next couple of months.

The party crossed the water with no visions occurring this time. The plan now is to return to [Gwent] to give the king and the church the prophecy. From there we will head over to [the kingdom of the South Saxons] to fulfill the favor to the druids. Other things to think about are the stories of giants that were told to the party by the villagers they saved and by Briana. They are stories of giants that eat people and terrorize the countryside. There is no detail but be it assured that the party will eventually be able to tell the story themselves. So at the end of this adventure we have a love stricken priest, a still mysterious warrior and a confused giant.

[Back to Adventures]

2nd Adventure

Our second adventure finds our merry and somewhat unlikely band of heroes in Glastonbury. Eira, Rodrick , and Bos have just received the prophecy from the preistesses on the isle of Avalon. It was decided that the group would travel to the kingdom of the South Saxons to aid the preistesses in determining what kind of aid they can give the Brits of that region to help in the fight against the Saxons. In particular the group is supposed to locate Cadwallen of Gwynedd who is roaming the area fighting the Saxons.

Before the group took off, Eira sent word to the King of the prophecy and Rodrick did the same by communicating with the local Abby. Once this was done, Rodrick became very sick. So sick in fact that he could not possibly travel with the rest of the group. This was somewhat inconvenient since Rodrick was really the only one who could speak Saxon and would not attract so much attention (although anyone with a 12 foot giant is hard to go unnoticed). This is important because the route to South Saxon goes through other Saxon countries.

Eira and Bos decided to start the journey for they were going to have to travel carefully. Once Rodrick was well then he would join them (he would be able to travel faster without being conspicuous). Part of the reason for starting off on the trip now was that Bos wanted to make a side trip to Stonehenge or rather Woodhenge nearby. Bos was following up on a suggestion by one of the priestesses to visit Woodhenge where he might find some of the answers to the questions he has regarding all of the weird things he has seen recently (unicorns, dragons in the mist, etc - see last adventure).

The trip to Woodhenge was uneventful. Eira and Bos arrived at Woodhenge to find four druid priests engaged in meditation. One of the priests greeted the two of them. The priest was kind and friendly and listened attentively to the questions that Bos and Eira had. Instead of answering the riddles that Bos had for him, he responded with another riddle. Essentially Bos was informed that the priest knew what he saw in the mist and on the island but was not the one to tell him what his visions meant. Instead he hinted at the fact that Eira and Bos would have to face it together...a more confusing riddle than what the two of the started with.

Eira and Bos continued on and were met by Mariel, a dryad. Mariel explained to the two that she was sent by Queen Adwyn to aid them in their journey. The druids here are also interested in how they can aid the brits in Saxon country. Bos and Eira accepted her aid and were amazed at the wonderful magic she could do. She could even make Bos appear to disappear.

Traveling was slow but aided greatly by Mariel. However, along the journey the group met up with a priest. It was obvious that the priest spotted them on the plains and Bos's curiosity got the best of him as he went to investigate. What the group found was a catholic priest willing to share a meal with the group as long they would listen to him talk about his religion. Our adventurers accepted the food gracefully and listened to the priest talk about his god. Eventually Eira found an opportunity to indicate that it was time to go. Bos paid the priest for the food and the group continued on its journey.

Shortly thereafter Eira and Mariel heard a group of men marching nearby. They hid between a pair of hills and waited for the band to pass by. Mariel used her powers to turn Bos invisible so that they would not be so obvious leaving the hills. Once the coast was clear the group left with Bos remaining invisible. This was fortunate because they did not go far before they were surprised by 5 warriors and a dark cloaked figure. Eira was injured immediately but managed to hold her ground. Mariel disappeared from sight and Bos went to attack a couple of the warriors close to him. Once Bos's hammer landed its first blow then Bos became visible to their attackers.

It was obvious that Mariel did not care for the battle that ensued. Eira took down one of her attackers but Mariel made sure the man would not die by stabilizing his wounds. This left her open for attack because as soon as she started to bind the man's wounds she became visible again.

Bos took on his two opponents with a vengeance. He managed to stun one but had another blow blocked. Bos quickly realized that these were seasoned soldiers. However, Bos knew that he could outlast these warriors and gain the advantage on strength alone.

During the battle Eira regained her composure and quickly decided to use all of her battle skills to take out another of her attackers. Bos began to do the same but something strange happened to him. The cloaked figure in the shadows appeared to wave his hands and all of a sudden Bos found that his mind was trapped and he couldn't do anything. While he spent all of his effort to shake off this strange feeling his attackers took this advantage to strike at Bos. Bos was able to shake off the strange feeling that overcame him and still remain conscious despite the blows he suffered from his attackers. This did not last however, because it happened again and just as Bos was overcoming this strange feeling again he fell unconscious from the blows of his attackers.

At this time Mariel attacked the cloaked figure in the shadows who turned out to be the priest that they had dined with earlier. Eira proved too much for her attackers and once Bos started to come around again the attackers realized that they could not win this fight. The two remaining warriors fled the scene. The priest attempted to flee as well despite the attacks he sustained by Mariel. However, Bos was able to put two bolts from his crossbow into the priest's back as he fled knocking him unconscious. Granted this wasn't very noble, as Eira pointed out to Bos, but it did not satisfy Bos to just let him get away with attacking them.

Once the priest and the two warriors (wounded but still alive) were tied up Bos removed all of their equipment along with the equipment from the dead warrior. Mariel stripped the priest naked and took his wand to place in the bag holding other supplies. As she did this she managed to rub off one of the runes on the wand leaving only one remaining. When the spell was set off something happened but whatever it was Mariel kept it to herself.

Once the groups own wounds were bound sufficiently they took off to continue their journey. They eventually arrived in South Saxon. One of the first sights they saw was smoke. A house was on fire and as the group approached the building they realized that the doors were barricaded and that there were screams coming from the inside. Bos immediately shed his shield and weapons and ran to the house. He broke the door down with no problem. Inside were women and children and a man lying on the floor. Mariel came in behind Bos and started to help the people outside. One of the women told Bos that there was a woman trapped upstairs. Bos immediately begin to work his way upstairs despite the difficulty he had because of his size. He reached the woman only to have the floor collapse under his enormous weight. He plunged all the way to the basement. By this time Bos was seriously injured from the fall and the fire surrounding him. There was only one way out of the basement and Bos could not fit through the opening. The fire began to intensify and so Bos put all of his strength into breaking through the opening. When all seemed lost the unicorn that Bos had seen on the Island of Avalon appeared behind him and pushed against Bos to help him through the opening. With their combined strengths the two were able to force a larger opening that Bos was able to leave through. Bos made it outside okay and the unicorn seem to disappear. Bos was severely injured and was close to collapsing which is what he did once outside the house. Mariel added Bos and was able to heal many of his wounds but not completely. Bos had lost all of his armor (studded leather) in the blaze and his clothes were charred and reduced to rags. Eira appeared shortly after Bos emerged from the building but she did not have any clothes on. Bos did not really take notice due to the seriousness of his injuries but he did think of the unicorn. Mariel helped Eira find some clothing.

At this time Mariel knows that Eira is the unicorn that Bos has been seeing. Bos does not know this yet. Eira hopes to keep this a secret.

Anyway, our adventurers aid the family in binding wounds and give them some money to help them on their journey (they have decided to leave and try their luck elsewhere where there are fewer Saxons and less fighting. One of the women gave Eira and Mariel some information on where they might find Cadwallen of Gwynedd. This is where we leave our story...
