Druid's Confession
by Joel Perkins
Well, the high priest got away. I am not pleased, but what could
we do. We cant track at night. The party was to damaged to follow
immediately. By the time we could, the tracks were gone. There
was also an incident in the tower that has me worried. It seems
some gems that I noticed have turned up missing. We confronted
those in the party. And everyone agreed to a search, everyone
but Llew. He said, "I do not have what you are searching for but
I do have secrets that are not for you eyes." Now I must point
out that that the search was voluntary. And Llew has not been
with the party long. It was with in his rights to refuse. It still,
however, looks bad when only one member of the party refuses and
the newest to join at that.
I decided to keep my eye on him, but I will not force him to comply.
Before we left the tower. Arthen made us all a generous offer
and a politically shrewd one. In exchange for the treasure that
the tower contained, he will give us each 5 acres of land along
the shore or a river, or he will give us 10 acres of land be it
field or forest. I, of course ,never take plunder but I will take
a gift from a friend and as I say I realize why he is doing it,
I took the 10 acres of woodland. Derrick his champion made out
well. He and Sima are to be married and so they both took 5 acres
of shoreline. But then Shard gave him his 10 acres more. Derrick
is doing well since he became Arthen's champion.
Caldor also took the land but Llew asked him time to think about
it. Ever the outsider.
Then Shard proposed to give Arthen 10 acres of land so he would
have some place to stay when he visited if Arthen would give him
the same. They agreed. I think Shard's bid to make an alliance
with Arthen is working well.
We have left the Tower and gone to the village. I had a talk with
the village mayor and told him that those in the tower were responsible
for the wolves. That we had dealt with them, and that there were
some townspeople in the tower that needs to be cared for and watched
for a month because I was not sure if they were under an evil
enchantment. I don't think he believed me and to tell the truth
I didn't really care.
Llew got the blacksmith to fix the armor that the captain of the
guard was wearing and we set out.
We have decided to take the route through the mountains instead
of continuing through Saxon lands. Then at least if we find any
other problems, at least we will be fighting and helping our own
people, not the Saxon serfs.
The traveling is hard. I miss my horse. The party seems to be
doing well together. Things are finally coming together. We have
set the watches. Caldor, the Dwarf and I are first, then Arthen,
then Derrick and Sima, I wonder about putting the 2 of them on
watch together. How much watching of each other will be going
on vs. how much watching out for trouble. We will see how things
go and adjust accordingly. After Derrick and Simas watch it is
Shard and Llew's turn. You can all see what I have done. I have
made sure that every one is grouped with someone they find congenial
and at the same time I have made it so that every new party member
is grouped with an old one.
We were a few days out when the troubles began to stalk our band
again. When we woke up one morning some of Llew's clothes had
vanished. Llew was to say the least not happy. I checked for tracks
but I found none that didnt belong to the party. The next night,
Caldor and I heard a whirling sound, I tried to wake up Arthen
and Derrick but they said it was our watch and our problem go
deal with it. While I can understand their feelings, I really
don't want a crossbow bolt in the back. I am going to investigate.
I didn't find anything, except that while I was out tramping through
the woods, my harp was taken. I have carried that harp a long
way. I am not at all pleased. I search for tracks again but nothing.
Shard tried to stay awake all night but I don't think he made
it.
Tonight we are trying something different. We have placed all
our items in the middle of camp and nothing was stolen. I hope
the thief or thieves are gone now that we are onto them. I did
find some tracks today. I am following them. I think we have found
the whirling sound. It seems we have fallen for the oldest trick
in the book. The thief distracted us by throwing a broken branch
across the camp and into the bushes making them rustle. I am going
to push to track the thief down. I want my harp back but we need
to find him before something valuable or important like one of
the halves of the sword is stolen. This may be our best and only
chance. This is the first time I have found tracks.
I followed the tracks to a cave. We have been talking about sealing
the entrance or smoking whatever is in there out. While the rest
of the party is getting wood. I am going to see if I can find
the thief. Perhaps this won't have to come to open battle, after
all. Nothing important has been taken I would even give up my
harp as long as I am sure the raids will stop.
I found what has been stealing from us. It is a goblin. I feel
sorry for them. Stolen as a baby and twisted by magic with no
hope of regaining human form and made ugly and ill shapen. My
harp and the fine clothes taken from Llew maybe the only things
of beauty that he has every seen or possessed. It tears at my
heart to see him try and tune it. I can see the care he is taking.
I know the power that music has in my life. I wonder if today
I can make a friend out of someone that was not a friend before.
I tell him that he doesn't have the harp tuned quite right, and
believe me I know because I have perfect pitch. He jumps and the
harp almost went into the fire. I tell him it was a nice harp.
That I used to have one just exactly like it. The goblin asked
what I am doing here and how I found him. I tell him that I tracked
him. The look he gave me was one of astonishment. Why does everyone
not believe me when I tell them that I can track? I offer to teach
him to play it.
But he says, "Its my harp. I found it and I can play it just fine.
Go away and leave me alone." I tell him that my friends are just
outside. Since you can play the harp so well. I suggest that we
have a contest. We can play for the harp. Who ever plays the harp
the best can have it. The forest goblin does not like that idea.
He suggests a game called Roshambo. Basically the rules are you
take turn kicking each other until someone gives up. Since he
turned down my contest I turned down his. Saying that I don't
like the sound of that because all he would have to do is kick
me in the balls and then say I won and I don't like the idea of
that.. I really have to learn to keep my mouth shut. He says that
sounds like a great idea and with that he came over to me and
kicked me there! The pain is incredible. I am seeing stars and
colors that I have never seen before and then he did it again
and that is the last I remember until I regained consciousness.
NO MORE MR NICE DRUID, there will be blood tonight. I went back
to the party. And I said I didn't care how long it took, or what
it took, but that I wanted that green skinned, misshapen creature
dead with his head on my spear. Then I said that he was a dishonorable
creature and that for the party's safety and the missions success
he had to be killed. I lead them all though the cave system until
we came to an underground river. The current was very fast. But
I am determined to see this creature dead and lying at my feet.
I tied a rope around me and when I got to the other side I untied
it and began searching for tracks.
There were none, and so I decided to search behind the waterfall.
Where I found some lye soap, a comb, and a small silver mirror,
I threw them all into the river. Then I started to climb up the
waterfall. I didnt get very far before I was washed down stream
I am glad I had taken the time to tie the rope back around me.
As my friends pulled me out of the water, I can tell that they
are beginning to worry about me but I am in the grip of one of
my rages. I truly try and control my temper but I must admit that
I am a vengeful man.
I told them to let out more rope and I head back down stream and
into the rock wall that this river passes through after several
minutes I realize my task is hopeless and start working my way
back. Perhaps I was gone longer because Arthen is pulling me in.
I asked for suggestions and someone suggested setting a trap.
Some of the party would remain in the Goblins old camp area while
the rest would return to our camp of last night. I asked Llew
to stay with me because the goblin also stole from him and then
I cast my blind the mind spell. We waited half a day and I recast
the spell and was getting ready to recast it again, when the goblin
finally showed up. He looked in even worse condition than I am
but I was done feeling pity for him. I waited until he had built
his fire back up and took aim and swing with all my might. And
I missed. I told him that was only warning and he screamed something
like you white robed bastard and then kicked me where it counts
even harder than the first 2 times. I was in so much pain I dropped
to the floor and started to black out.
Llew said, "Greeting. Stop I want to talk to you. I am not going
to hurt you I just want my stuff back." Well I could have told
him that wouldn't work. The goblin said, "No!" and ran away. Llew
chased him then returned empty handed. I was in a cold rage by
this time. Llew tried to help and I shrugged him off. I explained
why this creature must be caught or die and he didn't even say
a word about my harp just his stuff ! I am beyond words. To have
the goblin within grasp after all I had been through. All Llew
had to do was hold him or knock him out. Something, anything,
and he let him get away.
I will not travel with this Fey Creature any more, it is not that
he is fey, Shard is a boon companion but this Llew has no regard
for those he is traveling with he is just out for himself and
the main chance. If he were in a town of any size, he could live
that way, but out here in the wild you have to defend and protect
each other. I don't want to have to worry when I am down that
Llew will suddenly decide that he has always like my staff or
my cape or my shoes, and that if he lets nature take its course
that they can be his. Granted, my thinking is clouded by anger
right now. I am so mad at him for letting the goblin get away
but I don't like the precedent this will set for his future conduct.
I am going to force the party to choose. I will not share a camp
with a person that I am just as afraid of as I am the things that
might attack us. I have told the group that I will not travel
with him. I am not quoting druid law because he is not bound by
such even though I think he might be, especially now that we are
back in British lands. Arthen rode after me and asked about what
about Cadwallon's sword and I told him I have not given up my
quest. That I fully intend to deliver into Cadwallons hands my
piece of the sword and that if I fail well at least I tried that
Arthen and the rest of the party are free to do the same and if
I dont show up in a reasonable amount of time, maybe the they
should come back here and see if the goblin has it. I am so angery
right now, I need to calm down and think. I was so mad that I
was going to twist the Law. I am shocked at my own behavior. I
must think. |
