Druid in the Tower
by Joel Perkins
I have never felt so useless in all my life. Here's what happened.
The party was pretty chewed up by the wolves. There was/is some
kind of Dire wolf or Llewp Garu or were wolf. Running with them,
several in fact. One of then clawed me right through my armor.
Shard's magic saved my life. He un-gagged me and then did one
of the most amazing things I have ever seen. He tried to pick
the lock on my manacles. The brave and amazing part was how he
succeeded. He smashed his face against the bar breaking loose
one of his pointed teeth. Bleeding from his wounds, he picked
the lock on my manacles with it. This allowed me to cast a spell
that would render us unnoticeable, my teachers called it 'blind
the mind'. With it, intelligent creatures can not see you and
you can not interact with them or the spell will be broken. I
cast this on both of us. The draw back to this is that we could
not see each other.
It's like being alone at a party. Everyone sees and talks to everyone
else and they act as if you are not there.
That was all I did until much later that night. Except I did take
the razor from the altar. It was the only weapon I could find.
I had thoughts of trying to cut the high Rune Priest's throat
but I chickened out. If there is one thing this little adventure
has taught me it is that I am a Druid not a warrior, at least
not yet.
Let me reconstruct what happened to the party.
They decided to rescue us from the tower, I am not sure if it
was because Shard and I were the only healers, or because they
like us so much, or because I have half of the sword. Perhaps
it's because they were heroes and it had to be done.
Arthen and Derrick charged the tower on their warhorses under
a hail of arrows. They rushed the double doors and had their warhorses
rear and smash them open. Then they charged inside and sent the
horses out again. The tower's defenders fired arrow after arrow
at them while they hammered on the inner door until it burst asunder.
Then they rushed in breaking down doors as they advanced slaughtering
the Towers defenders in their righteous anger. When they had cleared
the bottom of the tower of its defenders., they started up the
stairs.
Meanwhile, Llew and Sima, not being in armor, circled the tower
and entered it from the rear. There in a pitched battle, they
slew the vile servants of those guarding the tower and made their
way silently up the stairs to try and free us while Derrick and
Arthen drew the attention of the guards.
Llew went to the top of the tower and no longer able to restrain
his battle lust, openly challenged the guards posted there to
mortal combat, so our line of retreat should be free if we needed
it. There in a mighty battle, with two to one odds he slew them
both.
Sima was still exploring the tower when sounds of combat drew
her to find Derrick and Arthen battling for their lives on the
tower stairs. She immediately entered the melee by throwing one
of her axes at the captain of the guard that Derrick was battling
grievously wounding him and distracting him long enough for Derrick
to deal him a mighty blow also. But great was his wraith at being
wounded and his fury knew no bounds and he smote Derrick mightily,
causing him to swoon. Sima bravely drew the rest of the guards
after her, leaving Arthen to finish off the Captain. Little did
she know how wounded he was for he too was soon to fall of the
wounds that he had sustained from the wolves and the mighty battle
in the towers bottom. Sima ran to the roof but Llew had fixed
the door so that the tower guards could not escape.
She beat on it furiously then turn at bay to hold off her attackers.
Just as they got close, Llew opened the door and pulled her to
safety then slew her assailants.
The captain of the guard battled furiously to subdue Arthen in
his weakened condition. Then he advanced on Llew and Sima. Llew,
the party's last hope, was able to stun the captain in his weakened
condition and he put him to death.
Sima ran to her beloved Derrick, to staunch his wounds and Llew
made sure that the tower guards he slew would not bother any helpless
victim again. As he walked back down the tower the locked door
opened and the high priest stepped out into the hall.
Shard had managed to slip out behind him and retrieve Arthens
sword. Then he engaged the High Priest in combat and disarmed
him of his most potent weapon. But the priest would not give up.
He fought Shard and told him to surrender or die. Shard's answer
was to attack again. And the High Priest fled before his wraith.
During this last battle, an underpriest read a scroll that caused
my spell to fail and I was captured again. The few warriors that
were left, seeing the carnage and destruction, sued for peace
and after they had bound and gagged the under priests and released
me. They were allowed to leave. I wonder if the wolves are still
out there.
I quickly healed both Derrick and Arthen and a quick search was
made of the tower. Our items were recovered and now we are inspecting
the prisoners. Two are in separate cells, I sense something different
about these. I am going to stop and rest here. Its been a long
night. |
