Rally Vincent

Background/History: Rally Vincent appears as Bean Bandit's partner in Riding Bean and also has her own manga series Gunsmith Cats. Although different visually (see description), the two characters are close enough to warrant a single write-up.

In Riding Bean, Rally is Bean's gunner carrying an assortment of firearms (including a 9 mm pistol, pump shotgun, taser and .44 magnum). In Gunsmith Cats, Rally is a bounty hunter (who owns a gun shop on the side). Kenichi Sonoda gun geeks all through Cats, writing little notes in the margins describing every firearm that shows up (as well as giving close ups of spent shell casings, complete with caliber markings). Very convenient for GMs who want to know what everyone is carrying. Grab your copy of The Armory or Dark Champions and you're all set!

Personality/Motivation: Rally's disads require a little explanation. The "Reckless" Psych Lim was quite obvious: in one sequence she drove her car through a warehouse wall to try and surprise a target; and also played Russian Roulette with a guy, betting that her ability to time the revolver's spin would allow her to point it him and pull the trigger 5 straight times and still leave him alive to answer questions. Hell of a Presence attack! The "Prefers to Wound" Psych is loosely based off of the 5 point CAK from Dark Champions. Although Rally carries a pistol and will use it, she prefers to disable her opponents, shooting the thumb off or otherwise rendering them incapable of action. If needed, though, she won't hesitate to shoot to kill. Finally, I have given her the Psych Lim of "Action Hero Mentality". This is an almost catchall psych lim for all her minor quirks—she prefers to work alone, doesn't try to involve the police if at all possible, takes threats very personally, isn't above using force to get what she needs, and generally acts in a manner similar to most movie/TV action "heroes." Finally, she has the Psych Lim of "Father Complex". She was always closer to her father than her mother while growing up and discovering his whereabouts is one of her main drives. Her father is also the one who taught Rally to shoot.

Goldie is a tall, blond drug smuggler/crime lord. She is very attractive, bisexual and a sadist. Originally annoyed with Rally's interference in her drug smuggling ring, Goldie eventually develops a fixation on the "lone wolf" persona she sees in Rally. Goldie doesn't like to get her own hands dirty, but she has more than enough goons to do her work for her. Of course, if needed, Goldie is plenty tough and competent on her own.

Powers/Tactics: Rally regularly shoots a target's thumb off, hence her skill levels. Both versions seem to try and hit specific locations, instead of just plugging away at a target. If you don't use hit locations, you might want to allow Rally to use her levels to reduce a target's activation roll on their armor to reflect this. (ie, she fires at some one with 14- Activation armor, using four of her levels to counteract this, the target now has an 11- roll).

The Sleight of Hand skill comes from seeing her pull a variety of gun "tricks," including holding a pistol by the barrel, spinning it around into her hand and getting a shot off. My favorite example comes from the anime, where she is supposed to toss her pistol to some one else. She has her right hand on top of her head and is holding the gun in her left hand by the barrel. Rally tosses the weapon to the guy, except all he catches is the magazine. Dropping her left hand, she spins the gun around and fires the round left in the chamber, catching the guy right between the eyes (unlike Bean, he doesn't get back up). Based on this, and a sequence where she gets a knife thrust through her right hand and uses her left hand normally, I gave her Ambidexterity.

Rally normally carries a 9 mm Czech Cz75 in a shoulder holster, she also has a .25 Cal pistol in a spring clip up her right sleeve (with the trigger guard cut away). The anime version had a stun gun (the kind that requires you to touch your target). Both carried extra clips for the pistol at the small of the back. If requiring heavy firepower, add a pump shotgun, a military style combat knife and kevlar body armor.

Appearance: Rally comes in two varieties, anime or manga. Both are about the same height and weight (between 5'6" and 5'8", 115 to 120 lbs). Both dress in the woman's business suit look (pants or skirt, shirt, tie, jacket). The anime version is fair skinned with blonde hair past her shoulders, the manga version has a deep tan and wavy black hair to just above her shoulders.

The anime version is British, having come to America when she was 15; the manga version is American (both by birth and upbringing) with some American Indian ancestry (hence her skin color). Both versions are age 20. The anime version has romantically involved with Bean for a while, before settling into a strictly-business arrangement.

Designer's Notes:

Rally's Name: According to Michael House, translator for AnimEgo's subtitled version of Riding Bean, the name "Rally" is a mistranslation. Her actual name should be "Larry." Since she had her name legally changed to that of her father's in the Gunsmith Cats series, this makes sense. Having the name "Larry" also makes sense in context with several comments made by other characters in Dark Horse's translated series, especially where someone comments "What kind of name is that for a broad?" On the other hand, both AD Vision and Dark Horse are using the "Rally" name, so it's a matter of personal preference. Personally, I think calling her "Larry" is rather amusing and makes for an interesting switch. Of course, your mileage may vary... Oh, BTW, Rally's real name is Aileen.

Rally's Car: The anime version of Rally didn't have a car (or if she did, it wasn't anything special). The manga version drives a Mustang Shelby Cobra GT500 (cool!). Quote: "...and that throbbing, five-hundred cubic-inch vibration right under your butt!" ahem...

A quick note; Rally's car is actually a Mustang Shelby GT500KR, and the "K"' stands for "King of the Road" (honest!). It does NOT have a 500 cubic inch engine by any means. It should have either a 390, 427, 428, or 429 cubic inch displacement engine. Now, it can be pointed out that Rally may have had the engine upgraded.
