Twilight Suzuka

Background/History: Suzuka is an "Ultra A-class" assassin by trade, known for killing her targets at the moment of sundown, hence her nickname of "Twilight." She is a master swordswoman, and seems to be one of, if not the, top martial artists in the galaxy. She was hired to kill Fred Luo by a business competitor, but was delayed by Gene Starwind and left since it was after sundown. After Fred hired Gene to be his bodyguard, Gene made a "deal" with Suzuka—she wouldn't kill Fred until she succeeded in killing him. Later, at twilight, Suzuka struck, and Gene managed to defeat her in a short but fierce fight. Later still, Suzuka ends up helping Gene and company fight off an attack of Kei pirates and ends up joining the crew because she knows the pirates are after Gene and she has a score to settle with the pirates. Besides, she has also decided that if Gene is to die, it will be by her hand and not some pirate's.

Suzuka initially appears in Episode 6, Beautiful Assassin, but doesn't join the crew until Episode 8, Forced Departure. She leaves at the end of the series (her contract to kill Fred Luo now void as her client cannot afford her fee), but rejoins at the tail end of Episode 26, Return To Space, because where the crew of the Outlaw Star is concerned, "even places I've been before will be interesting."

Personality/Motivation: Suzuka is cool, calm, and collected. In many ways she comes across as "elegant," both in the way she dresses (which is in a fancy kimono) and her manners (for example, she constantly tells Aisha not to call her "Suzu"). As an assassin, she has a strong code of honor, killing her victims at twilight or not at all, and giving said victims five minutes notice to allow themselves to prepare to die. If she fails to kill her victim in the allotted time (for example, when Gene interfered) she will leave, and then return the next day to try again. This code is also why she switched targets from Fred to Gene. He basically challenged her to a duel of skill (and honor), and she accepted, promising to leave Fred alone until she had dealt with Gene personally.

Nothing is known about Suzuka's origins, and the show doesn't go into her background at all. All we do know is that a Kei pirate named Hitoriga killed Suzuka's entire family and seems to be hunting Suzuka in order to kill her as well. This is why Suzuka desires to go with Gene and face off against the Kei pirates, both to kill as many pirates as possible and to find and kill Hitoriga.

Quotes: "It isn't sunset yet. How many will you see before you die?"

"My individuality is important to me."

"No one has ever lived to see even three of my techniques."

Powers/Tactics: Suzuka is a frighteningly skilled martial artist. She uses a wooden sword (i.e. a bokuto or bokken), which is her case is a straight wooden weapon about four feet long. Since said sword is invisible to weapons scanners, she can carry it with her into secure locations. With the sword, Suzuka can perform such stunts as: projecting an invisible sphere of chi, which strikes with destructive force; cut an entire cargo truck clean in half (lengthwise); perform a lethal charging slash maneuver; and deflect bullets, darts, and energy blasts. Her sense of balance allows her to stand on tiny objects such as narrow pillars, and she is capable of running along a length of chain without falling.

Against "normals," Suzuka will simply use her sword and her kenjutsu techniques. She often dashes in between two targets and does a Sweep to hit both of them virtually at once. Her speed is such she can do this while performing a Full Move.

Suzuka is supposed to have a whole assortment of martial techniques at her command to use in a fight. Her cutting a truck in half was supposed to be a "mere feat of strength," while she used "Flying Swallow Variant #1" to kill one Kei pirate, and "Crimson" to kill Hitoriga. However, virtually all of these techniques look the same in the anime, being a simple charge and cut.

Appearance: Twilight Suzuka stands 5'8" with a slim build. She has pale skin (paler even than Mefina), long black hair bound up into a ponytail, and dark brown eyes. Her costume consists of a white kimono with red trim and a red obi (belt), and an orange shawl draped over her shoulders. Supposedly, this master of the sword is only 21 years-old.

Designer's Notes: Suzuka is a pretty cool character, and can easily be dropped into any form of "wild" martial arts setting or even a fantasy setting with no problems at all. She could even appear in Pulp or modern settings, provided the GM is going to allow a character with the ability to chop cars and trucks in half with a wooden sword.

For all her skill, Suzuka has little defenses aside from her DEX and Dodging. This fits with the series, as she is never hit, but GMs might want to give her some Combat Luck, Armor defined as a shreddable kimono, or Damage Reduction defined as "rolling with the punch" or some such.

My only beef with Suzuka is how her fight with Gene is handled. It starts out okay, with Gene using a light shield to defend himself from her attack, but then he disarms her (still okay), and in the resulting scramble for her sword, gabs Suzuka's obi (which comes undone) and effectively disrobes her. This causes an inexplicable emotional collapse that seems somewhat weak in execution and sort of forced in order to allow Suzuka to A: Not kill Gene, and B: Join the crew.
