Jet Li

Background/History: Jet Li is without a doubt one of the top martial artists in the world today, and has risen to be a top Hong Kong film star as well. Born Li Lian Jie in Beijing, China in 1963, Jet Li first started practicing Wu Shu at the age of 8 as part of a State-run exercise program. His skill was such that he was kept on after the 30 day program ended and was placed into a special Wu Shu class that was run after his normal schooling. After winning his first competition at the age of 9, he found he only had to attend school for a half a day (which he thought was great, what kid wouldn't?) and eventually ended up training in Wu Shu 5-6 days a week at 8 hours a day. During this time he won several State competitions and even performed for President Richard Nixon on the White House lawn in 1974.

In the late Eighties, Jet Li began to appear in Hong Kong action films, and quickly rose to prominence as the master of Wuxia (aka "Wire-fu") films. His martial skill and agility immediately made him a star attracting attention not only in Hong Kong, but around the world. With the Communist takeover of Hong Kong, Jet Li has begun to make his move into Hollywood, starring in Lethal Weapon 4 and Romeo Must Die. For a better, purer taste of Jet Li's skill, I recommend: Fong Sai Yuk I & II, Once Upon a Time in China 1-6, Swordsman 1-3, and Tai Chi Master. Last but not least, one cannot miss Fist of Legend, Jet Li's remake of Bruce Lee's Chinese Connection (aka Fists of Fury), which is (IMO) the best martial arts film made as of this writing. It also heavily inspired the makers of The Matrix.

Personality/Motivation: Most of the disadvantages are pretty self-explanatory, and are common to any action film character. One thing to note, however, is that Jet Li's characters tend to be Chinese patriots. They fight for the honor of China and to preserve her heritage and national identity. Li's characters are not xenophobic, and often want cooperation with Western powers. But, he will not tolerate oppression, and will fight the Manchus, the Japanese occupation, or Western powers throwing their weight around with equal fervor. In addition, Jet Li is disciplined. He does not enter into fights for no reason, does not drink or eat to excess (he often preaches moderation and tolerance to his students and companions), and does not commit acts of vengeance without a good reason (But give him a good reason and you'd better get out of town fast.).

Quote: "We have to strengthen ourselves., so as to have a better future!"

Powers/Tactics: First and foremost, let me state that this character sheet is for Jet Li's movie roles, not his real-world skill. In general, Jet Li's character is a master of kung fu, and capable of all sorts of martial maneuvers. He is a very effective fighter, and capable of hitting people where and when he wants to. Many of his characters are very strong (Jet Li himself is supposed to be amazingly strong for his size as well), and often pull tricks like balancing heavy weights with one hand, while fighting with the other.

His multipower represents his common repertoire of Wuxia film tricks. While the Flight and Leaping are almost standard for Wuxia films.

Jet Li's characters are often monks or doctors (one of his most famous roles is playing Wong Fei Hong, a Chinese kung fu legend, doctor, and folk hero). His skills are meant to represent this, as well as his mastery of his martial art.

Appearance: Jet Li is fairly short, standing about 5'6" and weighing around 145 lbs. His hair is kept very short (in period films it is often cut into a queue) and Jet Li tends to wear traditional Chinese clothing (except in his modern day films, although Lethal Weapon was an exception). I have it on good authority that he's fairly handsome to female fans.
