Background/History: Little information is given about Smax's origins in the pages of Top 10, with the full story of his early years detailed in the Smax limited series. Jeff Smax's real name is Jaafs Macksun, and he comes from the very magic-rich world of Earth 137, complete with dragons, elves, and even singing swords. His parents were an ogre and a human heroine (seven heads tall, magically enhanced strength, and so on). The ogre captured Jeff''s mother when she came to kill him and so the ogre ate her horse, broker her sword, and raped her. Jeff (and his twin sister Rexa) were the result. When Jeff was around fourteen or so he managed to kill his ogre father and eventually was taken in by Uncle Mack and Aunt Minka (hence the last name of "Macksun" or "Mack-son").

Since Jeff and Rexa, as demi-ogres, eat a lot, Jeff got a job—dragonslaying. He did fairly well, and gained a great deal of fame (and fortune), until he tangled with the Firstborn dragon Morningbright. Humiliated and defeated, Jeff fled Earth 137 and came to Neopolis, eventually becaming a police officer, probably because his size, strength, and general invulnerability made it his best choice of an occupation.

Personality/Motivation: For the most part Smax is an antisocial loner with a surly attitude. Part of this may be due to his attempt to get away from his origins, or to keep people away from himself so he won't have to answer questions about himself he'd rather not hear. On the other hand, he has dated women in Neopolis, specifically Synaesthesia Jackson (who said touching him "tasted like bitter ashes"). It is worth noting that some of his behavior may stem from the loss of his previous partner, Stochastic Fats, who was murdered in his own home. For the record, Smax is partnered with Toybox in issue 1, and grows to be rather protective of her, slowly coming out of his self-imposed shell.

Growing up in Earth 137 hasn't helped his attitudes. He finds the place embarrassing, backwards, and primitive. He also has to deal with his sister Rexa, who he's in love with. And since sibling relationships tend to be common in mythology, they've been a couple for years. Now, having lived in Neopolis, Jeff tries to deny his feelings for Rexa, as he sees their sexual relationship as barbaric and backwards.

Quote: "Captain Traynor, sir? All due respect, sir... Permission to use extreme force."

Powers/Tactics: Smax is flat-out invulnerable. He can withstand a building falling on him, and is able to go toe-to-toe (for a while) with Commissioner Ultima in issue 10. He also seems to be superhumanly strong (he can punch through a building wall), and can fire a force blast from his chest. I'm unsure how strong he actually is, or how powerful the force blast is, and made educated guesses based on the comic series. His Wide Angle Pulse might be less damaging, as he didn't exactly injure a roomful of dancers when he used it (although he did stun every single one of them...). On the other hand, his primary blast did send Ultima through a wall, and effectively KO'd Ernesto Gograh with one shot.

Appearance: Smax stands something like eight or nine feet tall, with a broad and very muscular build. His skin is dark blue, while his hair and eyebrows are off-white. There is a white handprint on his chest. His police "uniform" is dark blue boots/trousers the same color as his skin, a white utility belt, and white gloves/sleeves connected to a long white cloak/jacket.

Designer's Notes: As with all my write-up for characters from Top 10, this one is only speculative. Smax appeared in all 12 issues of Top 10 as well as the Smax 4-issue limited series. His might be stronger, or not. As for his defenses, I tried to building someone who was really hard to hurt with much of anything, and admit to looking at Durak from some ideas. I also included some skills based on the Police Officer Package Deal found in the Dark Champions 5th Edition sourcebook.

Additional Notes: I recently received a letter from Gene Ha (yes, that Gene Ha!), containing comments on the various Top 10 characters I had presented here on the website. He mentioned the Smax mini-series (Smax the Barbarian), which I now own. I have incorporated some new material from the series into Smax's character sheet, mainly in the form of new skills and the Hunted by Morningbright. Thus, this character sheet sort of gives a Smax midway between the end of Top 10 and the start of Smax the Barbarian.

(Smax created by Alan Moore and Gene Ha, character sheet created by Michael Surbrook)
