Appearance: These armor-plated monsters are typically 9 1/2 feet tall at the shoulder and 12 feet or more in length and shaped somewhat like a badger. The bulette's hard-shelled back features a crest that often breaks the ground as it burrows beneath the surface- thus the name Landshark. It looks very little like a shark, more like an giant armadillo crossed with an alligator snapping turtle. It has a beak-like maw filled with sharp dagger-sized teeth and huge thick claws on all four feet. It's armor plates are very thick and prized for they may be fashioned into superior shields. Bulettes are generally colored blue-brown, with gray-blue to blue-green plates and scales.

Ecology: The Bulette is a fearsome carnivore ranging temperate climates and areas with loose soil. It is solitary, with only mated pairs sharing territory. No knows how or where the young are born or hatched, but sometimes smaller specimens are killed. They prefer the flesh of horses and men but dislike dwarf and shun elf-flesh. However, they love halfling and will hungrily dig into their homes to eat whole families. Bulettes make temporary burrows only, roaming a large territory, and rarely burrowing very far beneath the surface. They are binaural, and warm-blooded.

Motivations: Typical animal motivations, but especially irascible and hungry.

Combat Techniques: Bulettes are attracted to food or food-like items, and behave somewhat like their aquatic namesakes. They tend to attack by rushing their prey, bursting forth from the ground, and striking with a destructive bite of their massive jaws. Given their stupidity, hunger and lack of fear a bulette will attack even a knight in full plate mail on a fully armored war-horse, amidst a party of other , equally armed and armored comrades. If attacked while holding prey in their jaws they will go Berserk. They never drag victims back into their burrows, instead they begin eating immediately, such is their hunger and fearlessness. Or stupidity. Once it's gluttonous appetite is sated a Bulette naps until it's hungry again. Note that bulettes do not run unless confronted by an even bigger bulette (and maybe not even then). If cornered or seriously wounded they can leap to the air with blinding speed and strike out with all four feet, crushing opponents with their fearsome bulk. The thick armor plate of the Bulette has only two weak spots: it's small 8" oval eyes and the shell beneath its crest. This area is about a foot and a half square and in a fierce fight the bulette often raises it's crest, exposing this vulnerable site.

Rumors: Bulettes are rumored to be the result of a mad wizard's experimental crossbreeding of a snapping turtle and an armadillo infused with demon ichor.
