Ecology: The result of a mating between a griffin and a mare, hippogriffs are said to be found in the Rhiphaean Mountains in the land of Ryfee (also said to be the home of many griffins). It is presumed the creatures are meat eaters, just like their sires.
Personality/Motivation: Normal animal motivations. The hippogriff is a very free-ranging animal, and is noted for being untamable.
Powers/Tactics: At home both on land and in the air, hippogriffs tend to attack by sweeping down and slashing at a target with their claws. If pressed, the hippogriff with bite with its beak or lash out with its hooves. If wounded the hippogriff will not hesitate to flee, flying away as fast as it can.
Appearance: A hippogriff combines the hindquarters of a horse with the forequarters of a griffin. It has an eagle's head, a long neck and clawed forelegs, while the rest of the body is that of a horse. Coloration is similar to that of griffins and horses.
Designer's Notes: While the hippogriff is a common creature in European heraldry, and artistic depiction's of it can be traced back to the Greco-Roman era, this particular version of the hippogriff is based on its appearance in Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando Furisos. Tamed with a magic bridle, the hippogriff is used as a mount by several characters in the poem, before finally being set free. It is thought that the hippogriff's creation was inspired by Virgil's comment of Iungentur iam grypes equis, which translates to "to cross griffins with horses," a metaphor for attempting the impossible.
