Background/History: Randall Portman was among the first Novas known. He erupted on N-day itself. During the chaos of a multiple car crash, Portman (at that time a New York fireman) witnessed a tragedy in the making. A school bus had caught fire. The flames had already grown so high there was no rescuing the children trapped inside. In that instant of panic and desperation, Portman's instinctive need to help triggered his MR Node. He seemed to draw the flames into himself, extinguishing the fire and saving the trapped children. This incident lead to Portman's nickname "The Fireman" and propelled him to celebrity. He was taken in by Utopia for study and training in the use of his abilities. He found the organization's goals appealing and became a spokesman for them when he enter the political arena later on. In some Aberrant campaigns, Portman eventually becomes the first (and only) Nova president.

Personality: Randall Portman is a fairly straight forward man. He believes in fair play and the "American Way". While not a super patriot, he does embody many of the ideals of the US including a belief in hard work, honesty and justice. Sometimes he comes across as a bit naive in these views, buying into the Utopia party line pretty strongly, but he's not unintelligent. Portman's other strongest motivation is his desire to help people. It is what drove him to become a firefighter and into politics. For that matter, its what triggered his Eruption in the first place.

Powers: "The Fireman's" nickname is well earned, but he is not limited to fire. He can absorb any form of radiant energy, draining it from the environment or other Novas. In addition to drawing the energy into himself for strength he can use ambient energy to surround himself in a damaging field or project stunning bolts of power. He has a lesser ability to absorb pure force. All this channeled energy goes to his physical strength which can grow to become quite impressive.

Appearance: A man of average height with receding black hair, Portman is a rather unremarkable looking fellow. He has a round open face, thin lips and dark eyes. Portman has an "everyman" look that makes him very easy to deal with. He dresses quite well, in suits or casual clothing as suits the situation. When using his powers the "Fireman" is wreathed in translucent flames.
