Background/History: Barret Wallace grew up as a hard-working miner in the town of Corel, a small, coal mining town working for the Shinra Corporation. When Shinra introduced clean, safe Mako energy, Barret was the one to convince his town and especially his close friend Dyne to work at Shinra's reactor. However, when the reactor failed, Shinra blamed the town's workers. A fight broke out, and the town was burned to the ground. Barret and Dyne, both out of town at the time, were injured by Shinra troops. Barret escaped with his life, and Dyne was nowhere to be found.

Homeless, cursed by his friends for betraying them and made a widower by the fire, Barret left with his daughter Marlene. He traveled the world, eventually coming to Cosmo Canyon, where he learned the truth about Mako energy: that it drained the life of the planet, destined to eventually destroy it. On that day, Barret began his crusade against Shinra.

He traveled to Midgar and formed a counter-Shinra terrorist group dubbed AVALANCHE. Assisted by locals Biggs, Wedge and Jessie as well as Tifa Lockheart from Nibelheim, he set out to bring down Shinra and save the planet.

Personality/Motivation: Barret is obsessed with his battle against Shinra. He becomes totally unreasonable towards them, and has been known to lie and deceive people to get their help. He is a single father, and has to look after his often troublesome daughter, Marlene. Finally, he is marked for death by Shinra, and lives in fear of their discovery of his identity.

Powers/Tactics: His arm crippled by Shinra soldiers, Barret opted to have it replaced with a cut-down gatling gun. He fires the weapon in short, concentrated bursts, but can also funnel his natural power into it for a more powerful shot. Note that Barret has seemingly unlimited ammunition for his gun-arm; hence the 0 END cost.

Barret is also trained in the use of materia. Once equipped with some of the party's materia, he can tap their power to cast spells, boost his abilities or provide any number of odd powers.

Appearance: Barret is a tall, broad shouldered and powerfully built man of thirty-five. He has dark skin, short hair and a small, well trimmed beard. His lower right arm is replaced with a powerful gatling gun. He usually wears a singlet, sleeveless jacket, heavy slacks and thick miners' boots.
