Chantico
Chantico poses for the camera

Background/History: Ever since her first appearance people have wondered as to the origins of the woman who calls herself Chantico. While she supports mutant rights, tests have shown she’s not a mutant herself. These same tests have shown no signs of genetic tampering, physiological modification, technological augmentation, or medical manipulation. However, certain individuals versed in the mystic arts have stated she exhibits a faint aura (most prominent when she uses her powers) and thus may utilize some sort of magical artifact and/or spells as a conduit for her abilities. Chantico, for her part, is far too interested in her own agenda to worry about such things.

Personality/Motivation: Although many are willing to dismiss Chantico has nothing more than an absurdly-dressed publicity hound, she’s actually a strong proponent for social reform. While Chantico enjoys her television appearances, concerts, and photo gigs (as well as the money they bring,) she also uses such occasions to voice her opinions on poverty, hunger, the exploitation of undocumented workers (in both Mexico and the United States,) corruption in the Mexican government and police department, and the often extreme disparity between the haves and have nots of the world. In the face of mounting criticism that someone who’s so well-off shouldn’t talk about the plight of the poor, Chantico has donated large amounts of money to various charities and social programs, sponsored numerous fund-raisers, makes numerous public appearances to raise awareness of pressing problems, and performs quite a bit of community service each month. This, of course, has caused her to butt heads with politicians, police, and the drug cartels.

Quote: “Each year the cartels kill thousands while the police do nothing! We can’t sit idle, we must fight!”

Powers/Tactics: As her name suggests (Chantico [shan-te-ko] is the Aztec goddess of hearth and volcanos), Chantico possesses a potent assortment of fire-based powers. She can project a variety of flame-based attacks, is fairly immune to flame itself, and confounds Mexico City’s notorious traffic by making great arcing leaps through the air, leaving a bright trail of fire behind her. While she doesn’t seek out combat, Chantico won’t stand idly aside and wait for other superhumans (or the police) to arrive if she witnesses criminal activity. She’s usually start by turning on her Fire Shield (at half power) and arriving via Fiery Flight, seeking to make a Presence Attack upon landing. If pressed, she’ll use Fire Blasts (usually at reduced power to avoid serious injury) but once incinerated a number of Cartel vehicles by turning on her Firestorm in an effort to destroy a Cartel armory and drug lab..

On top of her powers, Chantico is also an accomplished public speaker and knows how to work a crowd.

Appearance: Chantico is an extremely attractive Hispanic woman who stands a shapely 5’6”. Her skin is a deep tan, with long black hair and dark eyes. It’s a well-known fact (and almost running joke among those who follow the superhuman community) that her costume has grown smaller and smaller over the years, in direct proportion to her popularity with the people. It started out as a simple one-piece swimsuit-like affair that left the arms and legs bare, but now consists of little more than a scant halter top and loincloth, heavily decorated and adorned with sprays of red, orange, and yellow feathers (many of which end up needing replacement whenever she uses her powers.)

Designer's Notes: The image the inspired Chantico was found on Deviantart, where it was labeled “Sun Goddess.” I liked the look and felt the feathers reminded me of certain Aztec warriors. Seeing feathers were yellow, orange, and red, I felt a fire theme was called for, especially after I found out that Aztec fire god was a woman. Inspired by real-life individuals such as Superbarrio, I decided to make Chantico as political and social activist and built her accordingly (hence her rather ‘slow’ SPD of 4.) As a final note, my personal opinion on her origin is that she’s a conduit for the goddess Chantico, who granted her power in exchange for acting as her agent/avatar on Earth. Of course, you’ll need to modify this concept based on how you treat gods and the like in your supers universe.

Chantico makes a good all-purpose hero of the people. Her costume and entertainment activities might make some PCs assume she’s just fluff, until they hear her speak and/or act. To make Chantico more powerful, up her CON, SPD, and turn her Multipower into a Unified Power. To make her less powerful, reduce her Multipower to 60 Active Points.
