Background/History: Jim West was relatively normal kid while growing up. It wasn't until he hit puberty he discovered he was a mutant. He found he became stronger in direct sunlight, could instantly transport himself to almost any place he could see, glow like the sun itself, and eventually, even project beams of concentrated light energy.
Realizing he was just like the mutants seen on TV (many of which were described as criminals and enemies of society) Jim decided to keep his mouth shut about his new found abilities. He began to shy away from athletic pursuits, realizing his bursts of immense physical strength would get him into a great deal of trouble, especially if he injured someone. So, he turned to more intellectual pursuits, although he still found time on the weekends to go to a secluded area and practice with his powers.
As time passed, and Jim became more experienced with using his mutant abilities, he realized he would need to make some important decisions about his life. His choice of employment was certainly the most important, since it would be rather hard for a known mutant to achieve anything resembling a stable homelife. Having been fascinated with law enforcement since high school, Jim decided to open his own private detective service after graduating college. He reasons were simple, he would be able to be his own boss -- which would make it easy to keep his abilities hidden, and could work his own hours -- which would allow him plenty of time of "other" activities.
One established as a licensed private investigator, Jim did all the usual things a private detective does; investigate divorce cases, insurance fraud, thefts, and background checks. He eventually specialized in insurance investigation and fraud. The work wasn't anywhere near as exciting as TV shows would lead one to believe, but on the other hand, Jim didn't have to deal with the stress and hassle of being a police officer either. He also realized that if the need arose, he could be more than just a simple "private eye", but could, in fact, be a powerful agent for law and justice.
Personality/Motivation: Jim has always tried to be the Good Samaritan type. Believing that even a single person can make a difference, he was active in a variety of social programs. Now, as Eclipse, he realizes he can "fix" problems that are otherwise outside his normal realm of expertise. As yet, he methods have been within the law, but there may come situations which will push this fact. When involved in a case or other troublesome matters, Jim will try and find out all the available facts, even if that means digging into areas where he's not wanted. Naturally, this philosophy has and will continue to get him into trouble with those who prefer to have such facts remain hidden.
Powers/Tactics: Jim's primary power is the ability to absorb sunlight, redirecting it in a variety of ways. When acting as Eclipse, he switches on his Force Field, transforming into a solid black figure surrounded by a glowing aura. This Force Field must remain active in order for him to use the rest of his Light Energy Powers. Other powers possessed by Eclipse include phenomenal physical strength; the ability to fire a powerful laser beam; to create blinding light flares; to transform himself into a beam of light and instantly transport himself from place to place; to generate bright light over an extended area; and to absorb light directed against him.
Appearance: Normally, Jim West appears as a young man in his late twenties, with sandy blond hair. He stands about 5'10" tall, with a muscular build and tanned skin. As Eclipse, he appears a solid black silhouette of a man, with bright silvery hair, surrounded by a glowing aura.
