Ecology: As their name implies, sea dragons are a marine form of dragon-kind. They tend to lair in deep sea-side caves and issue forth to prey on just about anything that swims in the ocean. Smaller sea dragons aren’t above beach-combing, and will strip local tide pools of shellfish and crustaceans. Larger dragons will take to the open ocean, hunting large fish, sharks, dolphins, porpoises, and even small whales. All sea dragons are more than ready to pounce on anything washed ashore, and can often be seen flying up and down beaches in their territory after storms, looking for dead and dying ocean life to devour.

Personality/Motivation: Typical animal motivations. Although as intelligent as other dragons, sea dragons are less concerned with amassing vast hordes of gold and gems, and more interested in securing a steady supply of food (which makes them somewhat of an outcast in regular dragon society.) This makes them very protective of their territories (usually a stretch of beach and the associated waterfront) and it’s not uncommon for two sea dragons to fight over ownership of a length of sea shore. Sea dragons will also try to defend their territory from such intruders as seal, sea lions, selkies, mermen, and the like. However, some have worked out arraignments with local fishermen, sea elves, mermen, and the like in which the dragon protects these would be “intruders” from various sea-borne menaces in exchange for a portion of everything they catch. A few have even gone so far as to actively assist in the catching of fish, working with the local inhabitants to bring down large sharks, whales, and sea serpents.

Powers/Tactics: Although powerful swimmers, sea dragons prefer to hunt from the air, diving down into the water to get at their prey. They’ll often perform a Grab with their Bite, and then rend their prey with their Talons. In addition, while lacking the fiery breath of their brethren, sea dragons can swallow great quantities of water and spit it out in a concentrated stream—a stream more than capable of smashing small boats.

While they lack many of the powers of larger dragons, sea dragons are still magical beings, and possess impressive defenses against attacks of all forms. A few are able to work magic, and often have sorcerous powers dealing with water and the weather.

Appearance: Long and serpentine in the body, sea dragons have bodies lined with fins and frills. Coloration tends to be in shades of blue, blue-green, or greenish (with some being more gray in color.)

Designer's Notes: Based on a miniature painted by Bill Keyes (a.k.a teh bunneh on the Hero Boards), the sea dragons was built from a modified dragon character sheet (found in the HERO System Bestiary.) I made a variety of edits to create my concept, eliminating most of the traditional dragon powers in favor of something more low-key in concept. However, you can easily make the sea dragon more dangerous by increasing its size, power, and magical abilities (including a breath weapon and/or spells.)
