Jiranee

Background/History: Many, many years ago, in a village on the outskirts of the city of Sartha, a young farm couple made a surprising discovery. A basket had been left out in front of their door, containing an infant elf-girl, scarcely a few days old. The couple, while childless themselves, took the infant as their own. They had no desire to offend the Fey who had left the child, and besides, if they took her in, good fortune must surely follow, right?

Raising the elf-girl proved to be a far different experience then if she was a human. The elf, named Jiranee by the couple (it means "spring flower," to mark the season she was found), grew slowly but learned quickly, and like all Fey eventually proved to be taller, stronger, and far more agile than her adopted parents. At best guess, Jiranee matured at half the rate of the rest of the children in the village, and twenty years later she could still be found at play with the village's preteens. However, when Jiranee did come of age, she did so with a vengeance, shooting up to become not only the tallest woman, but the tallest person in the village. She also proved to be stronger than all but a few (of course, a lifetime of working the farm didn't hurt), and she seemed a natural with the hunting spear.

Being the elvish daughter of human parents brought Jiranee and her village quite a bit of attention. Emissaries of the King of Virava arrived within weeks of her initial discovery (word spread quickly), and while Jiranee's parents were allowed to keep their daughter, it was made clear that once she was old enough, she would be sent to Sartha to be inducted into the royal house hold as a maid to the Queen. Jiranee's parents protested this decision, but to no avail—besides, if they argued overly much, the child would be taken at once, as opposed in the expected twenty years or so.

In truth, Jiranee spent nearly forty years on her parent's farm, leaving only when her father had died and her mother left the village to live with relatives. As for Jiranee, she packed her few things and left for the city of Sartha. Once she arrived, she was surprised to find the old King had died, and the new King was of a far different mind of what uses to put a tall, strong, elven farmgirl too—Jiranee was made a squire.

For the next ten years or so, Jiranee served the knights of Sartha, learning how to use weapons of war, how to ready a horse for battle, how to put on a suit of armor, how to dance, read, write, play games of strategy and tactics, how to recognize heraldic devices, how to carve meat at the table, and a multitude of other things. At times, Jiranee wished for the simplicity of her farm, at others, she found her new life to be far more exciting than she could have ever imagined.

As with all squires, there came the time for her to be given her spurs and dubbed a knight. It was a proud time for Jiranee, made prouder still in that her mother was able to witness the event. Her service resulted in her being inducted into the Royal Guard, where she has stayed ever since, rising to the rank of Captain. In that time, she has served a number of Kings and Queens (twelve to be exact) and has been a fixture of life in Castle Sartha for an astonishing 150 years.

Personality/Motivation: Captain Jiranee Jenvirava (her last name means "Child of Virava") has served her kingdom for decades. She has seen squires, knights, Lords, Ladies, Queens, and Kings come and go, and still she remains, virtually unchanged. This has begun to weigh heavily on her mind. Unlike other elves, she has a human outlook on life, and tends to think more of the here-and-now, as opposed to the elvish way of thinking, in which subjects may be considered for decades before they are acted upon. She has started to fret she will outlive the kingdom, and become adrift in a world where she doesn't belong—rejected by elves but unable to be accepted by other humans.

In order to prevent this from happening, Jiranee has become one of the King's most valued advisors, as well as the Royal Historian of Virava. She keeps a carefully annotated journal of all events that happen in the Kingdom, and will often compare current events to those she has personally witnessed in the past, as well as what actions the then-current Royalty did to deal with it. Hopefully, she can prevent the current King from repeated past mistakes since, as she can honestly say, she was there personally to witness what happened last time.

As part of her duties as Royal Historian, the current King has wisely made Jiranee his agent in the field, giving her the freedom to travel the length and breadth of Virava without let or hindrance. This has helped to ease Jiranee's mind a great deal—it has gotten her out of Sartha and out into the lands she has either rarely (or never) seen before. It has also given her the freedom to act as her conscience wills (tempered by her oaths and duties to the crown), and get her away from tiresome court politics. She has become, in effect, a paladin or knight errant, acting only on the word of the King.

Despite this welcome change in her routine, the fact is, Jiranee is two-hundred years old. Her thinking may be human, but her body is elvish. She knows the current King will age and pass on, and she will remain. She has seen many friends grow old and die, leading her to feel more and more lonely. While she has had lovers before, they have been a spare few—most Viravian men are too intimidated by her height, her exotic looks, her rank, and her age to attempt any sort of romantic relationship. Obviously, an elven mate would be ideal, but while the elves she has met have been cordial enough, they have had little interest in any but a diplomatic relationship. She wonders if this has something to do with her heritage. While she has the height and general look of a Gray Elf, her skin and hair indicate she also has Dark Elf parentage. However, Jiranee has long since discarded any desire to learn who her "real" parents are. As far as she is concerned, they were farmers in a village outside of Sartha.

Quote: "Squire Akarin, stop trying to impress me with your sword tricks and just fight. Trust me, I've seen it all of them before, and probably before you were born. Now, let's try it again."

Powers/Tactics: Having served in the Royal Guard for a century-and-a-half means Jiranee has seen most everything at least once. She is an accomplished warrior, her swordsmanship has few equals, and almost no one can match her with the spear. She can quickly tell a foe's skill level by watching them fight for just a few short moments, and knows a large number of tricks with which to confuse and distract her opponents. Jiranee is also well-learned, and has a good understanding as to the nature of life in the Royal House (not surprising considering her age) as well has how one should act in all situations.

In battle, Jiranee will fight with sword and shield from horseback, but prefers the spear if on foot. When in melee she will stand in the second rank, behind the shieldwall, counting on her great height and longer reach to allow her to strike foes with her spear at will. If her spear is lost, she will then draw her longsword, wielding it with both hands and using her height to deliver crushing blows to the head and shoulders of her enemies. While she won't hit as often, the times she does hit will usually result in incapacitating wounds.

Jiranee hasn't reached her present age by being a fool on the battlefield. If hard pressed or wounded she will attempt to escape, and if that is impossible she will ask for quarter, counting on her rank to see her request granted. She has been a prisoner before and knows only a fool would attempt to kill Jiranee Jenvirava if she has thrown down her sword-- her ransom would make any man instantly rich!

Appearance: Captain Jiranee Jenvirava is of mixed Dark/Gray elf parentage - which probably explains why she was abandoned. She stands a towering 6'6" with a slender, albeit well-endowed, figure. Her skin is a warm reddish-brown color, while her hair is light silvery-blue and falls to her waist. She has long narrow ears that taper to a point and large greenish-gold eyes.

When on duty Jiranee wears thick hose, leather boots, and a quilted long-sleeved arming jacket that falls to mid-thigh. To this she adds three-quarter plate legs (consisting of cuisse, poleyn, and a shortened greave), and vambraces with couters (covering her forearms and elbows). She will carry her spear and have a longsword on her left hip. In the field she will wear full plate with sallet and add a bevor once the time for battle has come. When required to attend court, she will wear the current fashions, which seem to be rather scandalously cut for her rather conservative farm-girl tastes (especially considering her figure).

Device: As the King's agent, Jiranee bears his badge—a black sword point down on a white field (argent a sword sable). Her equipment tends to be decorated with this badge with minor coloration variants.

Designer's Notes: Captain Jiranee Jenvirava is meant for high- to epic-level fantasy games. Or, barring that, one in which D&Dish elves live. She is based on some fan art of the character Lunalis van Venus, who is from the Japanese on-line RPG Asura Fantasy Online. I know zero about Lunalis, other than she's obviously an anime elf, and made up Jiranee's origin whole cloth. I wanted it to be a reversal on the typical "human brought up by aliens" origin you usually see and make her the "alien" in human culture. Her dark skin brought about the idea of her being the result of a forbidden tryst between the normally antagonistic Gray and Dark elves, and away I went! (Dark elves in anime have brown skin. Dark elves from the Korean on-line RPG Lineage II have bluish-gray skin. The Night Elves in World Of Warcraft have purplish skin.)

I've tried to avoid being overly specific about the Kingdom of Virava, although it will admit it probably is a pseudo-European monarchy or some sort with knights, lords, kings, and oaths of fealty. I presume it to have a temperate clime and based on the art, a liberal sense of courtly fashion.

Jiranee makes a good plot hook to get a group of PCs involved in their first long-term adventure. As the King's agent, she could recruit them to accomplish some task—such as clearing out a monster from its lair, to recovering a lost item from a ruined castle. She might also ask them to scout the border, track a caravan or a fugitive, or any number of things she personally can't do. She will accompany the PCs if fighting is to be involved, but is smart enough to leave experts to the craft if the job requires tracking, magic, or something similar. As she's 200 years old and not even out of her elvish youth, you shouldn't down-power Jiranee. On the other hand, to make her more powerful, give her a level of Deadly Blow with her spear, up her DEX to 21, and give her the Weapons Combat martial art.

One final note—Jiranee should be played as if she is a human. She shouldn't act as if she is "attuned" to nature or have any special affinity for magic beyond her basic 8- Power Skill (which she has almost never used knowingly). She shouldn't act capricious or take the typical elven "wait and see" attitude. Like most humans, she should react to events quickly and with haste—she isn't much for debating the issue.
